Generative AI Policy
Generative artificial intelligence, specifically the kind based on Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, has become a transformative force in many fields. Scholarly writing and publishing are no different, and generative AI has begun to have an impact on scholarly work. This journal acknowledges the increase in availability and use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in academic research and sets out the following rules in relation to how authors, editorial members, and reviewers should work with GenAI.
Generative AI refers to artificial intelligence technologies capable of producing text, images, or other content in response to user inputs. Tools such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, and similar models fall under this category.

Authors, reviewers, and editors must adhere to
GenAI may assist in minor aspects of the publishing process (e.g., language editing) but must not replace human intellectual contributions or create fabricated content.
Authors are required to disclose the use of GenAI in their manuscripts. Disclosure must explicitly state which tools were used and for what purposes.
GenAI tools cannot be credited as authors, as they do not meet ICMJE’s authorship criteria: substantial intellectual contribution, drafting or revising the work, and accountability for content.
Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and ethical compliance of their submissions, even if AI tools were used.

Authors
Generative AI cannot be listed as an author in journal. An author must be able to agree to and be accountable for the aspects of their authorship under the CRediT taxonomy, which an AI cannot do.
When a generative AI model is used in the drafting of a manuscript for publication, the use of AI must be disclosed in the methods section and cited.
When AI is cited in journal, the author must employ the software citation template, which includes specifying in the methods section how, when, and to what extent AI was used. Authors of journal are required to upload the full output of the AI as supplemental material.
Please note that for the purposes of this policy, generative AI does not include grammar-checking tools, citation software, or plagiarism detectors that don’t employ the use of generative AI; use of these tools does not need to be disclosed or cited in manuscripts submitted to journals.
Additionally, please note that when information is entered into generative AI, the organization that runs the generative AI will likely have access to this data. Authors should be aware of this possibility and how it may impact the privacy of participants in their studies, as well as how it may impact their own privacy and intellectual property. For this reason, journal editors and reviewers may not enter materials from submitted manuscripts into generative AI, as it would constitute a violation of the confidentiality of the peer review process.
Authors who used AI technology to conduct the study should describe its use in the methods section in sufficient detail to enable replication of the approach. Including the tool used, version, and prompts where applicable.

Reviewers
Reviewers do not have permission to use Generative AI to complete any reviews of articles. Sharing articles under review with third-party AI providers for this purpose may contravene authors’ intellectual property rights to their work.
Additionally, please note that when information is entered into generative AI, the organization that runs the generative AI will likely have access to this data. Journal editors and reviewers may not enter materials from submitted manuscripts into generative AI, as it would constitute a violation of the confidentiality of the peer review process.

Language Refinement: Authors may use GenAI for grammar correction, syntax improvements, or stylistic edits.
Data Representation: AI-generated charts or images are acceptable if the data source is clearly cited and visualizations are verified.
Idea Generation: AI tools can assist in brainstorming or exploring research frameworks but should not contribute original hypotheses or conclusions.

Fabrication or Manipulation: AI must not be used to generate false data, references, or conclusions.
Plagiarism: Using AI-generated content without proper attribution is a violation of ethical publishing standards.
Misrepresentation: Authors must not misrepresent AI-generated work as their own intellectual contribution.

Editors will evaluate disclosed AI use during the review process to ensure it complies with this policy.
Manuscripts suspected of undisclosed AI-generated content may undergo further scrutiny, including plagiarism detection tools or re-submission requests.

All authors must provide a clear disclosure statement regarding the use of GenAI. The statement should include:
