قلعهبندر در حاشیۀ شمالی دشت شیراز و برفراز کوه مُشرف بر تنگهای قرار گرفته که بههمراه تنگ اللهاکبر، تنها مسیرهای دسترسی شیراز به دشتهای شمالیتر و دشت مرودشت بودهاند. قرائن تاریخی در کنار شواهد باستانشناسی نشان میدهند که این قلعه بههمراه قلاع دیگری همچون قصر ابونصر و احتمالاً قلعۀ پل فسا، اداره و کنترل نواحی دشت شیراز در دوران ساسانی و صدراسلام تا پیش از احداث شهر نوبنیاد شیراز را در اختیار داشتهاند. با توجه به فقدان فعالیتهای منسجم باستانشناسی برروی این قلعه، در این جستار کوشش شده تا با گردآوری و تکیهبر شواهد تاریخی و جغرافیای تاریخی و سنجش آنها با برخی قرائن باستانشناسی، تصویری از تاریخ و دورههای استقرار و فترت این قلعه مهم در دشت شیراز بازسازی شود. این پژوهش درپی پاسخگویی به دو پرسش اصلی است؛ نخست آنکه با تکیهبر شواهد تاریخی موجود، قلعهبندر در چه دورههایی دارای استقرار و موردتوجه بوده و چه زمانی متروکشده است؟ دیگر آنکه مکانیابی قلعهبندر بهعنوان «دژ شهموبدِ» مذکور در منابع جغرافیایی تا چه میزان قابل پذیرش است؟ پژوهش حاضر با رویکردی تحلیلی-تاریخی انجامشده و گردآوری اطلاعات آن به شیوۀ اسنادی و میدانی بوده است. نتایج حاصل از این پژوهش نشان میدهند که قلعهبندر دستکم از دورۀ ساسانی تا دورۀ صفوی بهصورت متناوب و بهدفعات مورداستفاده قرار گرفته و پس از آن متروک شده است. از منظر ادبیات و فرهنگ عامه نیز شباهتهای جالبی میان روایتهای پیرامون این قلعه و داستانهایی از هزار و یک شب روشن شد که تا پیش از این چندان موردتوجه قرار نگرفته بود. در عینحال برخلاف آنچه غالباً از سوی پژوهشگران عنوان شده است، قلعۀ شاهموبد که در برخی منابع جغرافیایی متقدم اسلامی به آن اشاره شده نه با قلعهبندر که با ویرانههای موسوم به قصر ابونصر مطابقت مییابد.
