باور به زندگی پس از مرگ به خلق گورستانها، بناهای یادمانی و آداب و رسوم مرتبط به آن میانجامد. بقایای برجای مانده از جوامع باستانی در بیشتر مواقع به قبور و آرامگاههای آنان محدود میشود، که بررسی در آن بخشهایی از مذهب، آئین و باورهای دینی آنان را آشکار میکند. الیمائیان حاکمان نیمهمستقل و خودمختار همزمان با سلوکیان و پارتیان در جنوبغربی ایران هستند که گونههایی از معماری آرامگاهی آنان برپایۀ کاوشهای باستانشناسی در محوطههایی چون: شوش، دستوا، گلالک، صالحداوود، کَلِچندار شمی، چشمهچلوار، قلعهشیاس، کافهبابک و هشتلیک بهدست آمده است. در بررسی معماری آرامگاهی الیمائیها علاوهبر توصیف و گونهشناسی آنان، شباهتهای قابلمقایسهای با شیوههای خاکسپاری تمدنهای پیشین و حکومتهای همزمان آشکار میشود که نویسندگان این پژوهش با استفاده از مطالعات تاریخی-تطبیقی و براساس نتایج کاوشهای الیمائی سعیدر دستیابی به آن دارند. این پژوهش نشان میدهد که با توجه به تفاوتهای زیستمحیطی کوه و دشت، معماری آرامگاههای الیمائی به دو نوع کوهستانی و دشتی طبقهبندی میشود. با توجه به موقعیت آنها نسبت به سطح زمین، آرامگاههای کوهستانی به آرامگاههای زیرزمینی، آرامگاههای نیمهزیرزمینی و آرامگاههای ساختهشده در سطح و آرامگاههای دشت الیمائیان به دو گونۀ آرامگاه زیرزمینی (سردابهای) و آرامگاه نیمهزیرزمینی تقسیم میشدند. گونهشناسی و مقایسۀ آرامگاههای الیمائی با آرامگاههای بهجامانده از تمدنهای پیشین و بومی (بینالنهرین و ایلام) و حکومتهای سلوکی و اشکانی نشان میدهد که این مقبرهها هنوز تحتتأثیر سنتهای محلی مانند بینالنهرین و ایلام هستند.
