دیوارنگارههای خلقشده در گذشته جنبههای ارزشمندی از تاریخ و فرهنگ دورۀ خود را به تصویر میکشند که درواقع نوعی بازنمایی از تفکرات و عقاید موجود در زمانۀ خود هستند. نقاشیها در طول زمان و بهواسطۀ عوامل مختلف در معرض آسیب، فرسایش و تخریب قرار میگیرند. در اینمیان حفاظتگران و مرمتگران بهمنظور جلوگیری از پیشرفت فرسودگیها اقداماتی را جهت حفاظت از اینگونه آثار انجام میدهند. این پژوهش قصد دارد تا با جستوجو در رویکردهای حفاظت و مرمت سنتی در دیوارنگارههای کاخ چهلستون اصفهان و به پشتوانۀ بازشناخت سابقۀ فرهنگ و هنر ایرانی در این نقاشیها به تبیین مفهوم و جایگاه خوانایی در این آثار بپردازد. افزونبر این، پژوهش حاضر درپی پاسخ به این پرسش است که، رویکردهای هنرمندان و مرمتگران سنتی تا چهمیزان برمبنای توجه به سابقۀ فرهنگ و هنر ایرانی استوار بوده است؛ و با عنایت به این موضوع، مفهوم خوانایی در نقاشیهای دیواری کاخ چهلستون را چگونه میتوان ارزیابی کرد؟ روش پژوهش در این جستار توصیفی-تحلیلی است؛ بنابراین تلاشدارد با بررسی تفکرات و نظریات اندیشمندان حوزۀ حفاظت و مرمت و نیز اندیشمندان ایرانی-اسلامی از باب تأثیر سابقۀ فرهنگ ایرانی-اسلامی و بررسی رویکردهای حفاظت و مرمت سنتی در این آثار، به چگونگی ادراک و جایگاه اصل خوانایی در دورۀ مرمتی ذکرشده بپردازد. تحلیلهای صورت گرفته نشان میدهند که رویکردهای هنرمندان-مرمتگران سنتی مبتنیبر توجه به سابقۀ فرهنگ و هنر ایرانی و سبکهای هنری دورۀ خود بوده و بدینترتیب با تکیهبر محاکات و بازنگاری نقاشیها و عنایت به انتقال محتوا و معنای درونی اثر ازطریق حفاظت از قالب روایی نقاشیهای دیواری در چهلستون، خوانایی بیشتری از این آثار را در اختیار مخاطب قرار دادهاند.
