در سال 1398، بهمنظور شناسایی و مطالعۀ محوطههای دورۀ ایلخانی در حاشیۀ رود ارس، در محدودۀ استانهای آذربایجانشرقی و آذربایجانغربی، یک فصل بررسی و شناسایی با تمرکز بر منطقۀ درهشام در شهرستان جلفا انجام شد. نتایج این بررسی به شناسایی و ثبت 53 سایت باستانی منجر شد که شامل: محوطه، روستا، پل، کاروانسرا، گورستان و کلیسا از دوران پیشازتاریخ تا دوران اسلامی بود. در اینمیان، 35 محوطه متعلق به دورۀ ایلخانی بود که محوطههایی مانند گورستان ننهمریم و محوطۀ کلیسای چوپان از اهمیت ویژهای برخوردارند. در این محوطهها تعداد بسیاری سفالینههای ساده و لعابدار از سدههای میانۀ اسلامی کشف شد. شناخت اجزای سازندۀ این سفالها، بررسی تفاوتهای ترکیبی میان نمونهها، تعیین درصد هریک از اجزا، تخمین دمای پخت سفال براساس کانیهای موجود و درنهایت، بررسی منشأ اولیۀ آنها بهلحاظ باستانشناسی (محل تولید) و شناخت ساختار اجتماعی منطقه از اهمیت زیادی برخوردار است. شناخت اجزای سازندۀ سفالها میتواند اطلاعات مفیدی دربارۀ منشأ جغرافیایی و مصرفکنندگان آنها ارائه دهد. بر ایناساس، مطالعات پتروگرافی روی 12 قطعه سفال از دو محوطۀ گورستان ننهمریم و کلیسای چوپان انجام گرفت. نتایج نشانداد که تمامی نمونههای سفال، تولید محلی بوده و از اینرو، ازنظر ساختارشناسی شباهتهای بسیاری به یکدیگر دارند. براساس آنالیزهای انجامگرفته، ترکیب همۀ سفالهای مطالعهشده مربوط به منطقۀ جلفا است. باتوجهبه رسوبات رودخانۀ ارس و رودخانههای فصلی و محلی، بیشتر سفالهای بررسیشده دارای ترکیب رسوبی و کربناته هستند و تحتتأثیر آبرفتهای منطقه قرار گرفتهاند؛ همچنین، پتروفابریک نمونههای مطالعهشده نشان میدهد که این سفالها ازنظر ترکیب و منشأ تقریباً یکسان و مشابه هستند.
