ایران یکی از قدیمیترین کشورهایی است که به ضرب سکه اقدام نموده است و قدمت ضرب سکه در آن به دورۀ هخامنشیان میرسد. از آنجاکه سکهها از فلزات ضرب شدهاند، بیشتر آنها تا امروز برای ما باقیماندهاند و اطلاعات فراوانی در زمینههای هنری، فرهنگی، دینی و اجتماعی در اختیار قرار میدهند؛ درواقع سکهها اسنادی هستند که با دارا بودن تاریخ و محل ضرب، نام و القاب سلاطین، کمک شایانی در پژوهشهای باستانشناسی و تاریخی در اختیار محققین قرار میدهند. در گذشته، سکهشناسی زیرمجموعۀ علم باستانشناسی قرار داشت، ولی امروزه علمی مستقل است که علاوهبر تبیین و توضیح تاریخ سیاسی، در زمینههای تاریخهنر و تاریخ عقاید اقتصادی و اجتماعی نیز کمک شایانی میکند. سکههای مفرغی آنتیخوس سوم با تاریخ لشکرکشی بزرگ وی به شرق با ضرابخانۀ همدان شناخته میشوند؛ هرچند برروی سکههای وی، شاه دیهیمدار دیده میشود، اما بر پشت سکه، مادیان و کره اسبی مشاهده میشود. آنچه که مسلّم است، آنچنان نقوشی متنوعی در سکههای سلوکی دیده نشده، اما در هنر هخامنشی بهیاری مُهرها قابلفهماند. براین مبنی، پرسش پژوهش حاضر مطرح میشود که، دلیل حضور تصویر مادیان و کره اسب بر پشت سکۀ مذکور چیست؟ براساس پرسش مطرحشده، فرضیۀ پژوهش را نیز چنین میتوان عنوان کرد که، درحقیقت آنتیخوس سوم با بهرهگیری و جایگزینی این نقوش، تلاشکرده تا خود را شاه مشروع ایران به تصویر بکشاند و پیدایش نقوش اینگونه اسبان برروی سکههای آنتیخوس سوم، به موضوع حضور و نقش سوارکاران مادی در لشکر شاهی نیز اشاره داشته است. پژوهش حاضر دارای نظام کیفی و راهبردی است و براساس هدفهای بنیادی صورتگرفته و ازنظر روش، تاریخی است. روش یافتهاندوزی دادهها به شیوۀ کتابخانهای صورت گرفته است؛ در این شیوۀ به بررسی و مطالعۀ نمونههای موردنظر پرداخته شده است. این نوشتار تحلیلی-توصیفی و بهصورت مقایسۀ نقوش موردنظر با دیگر یافتههای هنری برای نتیجۀ مطلوب انجام شده است. مستندات تصویری تهیهشده از نقشها با نگاهی مقایسهای و تطبیقی با دیگر یافتهها مورد بررسی قرار گرفته تا علاوهبر حفظ و شناسایی این آثار، گامی برای شناخت بیشتر و مؤثر این اثر برداشته شود.
