 پایان هزارۀ چهارم پیش‌ازمیلاد، آغاز عصرمفرغ و شهرنشینی و شروع عصرآهن در دو جبهۀ شمال و جنوب البرز از موضوعات مهم باستان‌شناسی است. پژوهش‌های باستان‌شناسی نشان می‌دهد که با پایان سیلک III بسیاری از استقرارهای دشت‌های مهمی چون قزوین فروپاشیده‌اند و این روند در اوایل هزارۀ سوم پیش‌ازمیلاد در دشت‌هایی مانند کاشان و تهران نیز رخ‌داده است؛ با این‌حال، در دشت قزوین از نیمۀ دوم هزارۀ سوم پیش‌ازمیلاد محوطه‌هایی دوباره ظهور کردند، درحالی‌که در دشت‌هایی مانند تهران، قمرود و کاشان این استقرارگاه‌ها دیرتر مسکون شدند. ازسوی دیگر، تاریخ استقرار در جبهۀ شمالی البرز طی هزارۀ چهارم و سوم پیش‌ازمیلاد با جبهه جنوبی تفاوت دارد؛ هرچند شواهد اندکی از نفوذ فرهنگ سیلک III در این بخش دیده می‌شود، اما در هزارۀ سوم پیش‌ازمیلاد استقرارگاه‌های مهمی شکل‌گرفت که بیانگر دو مسیر متفاوت تحول فرهنگی در شمال و جنوب البرز است. این پژوهش با تکیه‌بر داده‌های باستان‌شناختی حاصل از کاوش‌ها و بررسی‌های میدانی در نواحی شمالی و جنوبی البرز، به تحلیل تحولات فرهنگی عصرمفرغ (هزارۀ سوم پیش‌ازمیلاد) می‌پردازد. در این دوره، شبکه‌های برهم‌کنش فرهنگی، تبادل مواد خام، فناوری و الگوهای سفالگری، ارتباطات میان دشت گرگان، جنوب ترکمنستان، مازندران، شمال‌شرق ایران و فلات‌مرکزی را گسترش داد. شواهد محوطه‌هایی چون: تپه‌حصار، ترنگ‌تپه، قلعه‌بن، تپه‌کلار و قلی‌درویش نشان‌دهندۀ گونه‌گونی فرهنگی، هم‌پوشانی سنت‌های سفالگری و گاه‌نگاری متفاوت در این نواحی است. پژوهش تأکید می‌کند که درحالی‌که فلات‌مرکزی ایران در اواسط هزارۀ سوم پیش‌ازمیلاد با فروپاشی و فترت روبه‌رو بود، جبهۀ شمالی البرز، به‌ویژه شرق مازندران و دشت گرگان، وارد مرحله‌ای از شکوفایی فرهنگی، پیوندهای منطقه‌ای و شکل‌گیری الگوهای شهری شد. هم‌زمان، در جنوب البرز نیز نشانه‌هایی از مهاجرت، تجزیۀ ساختارهای پیشاشهری و سازگاری با فشارهای زیست‌محیطی مشاهده می‌شود. این مطالعه نشان می‌دهد که حوزۀ البرز مرکزی در تبیین فرآیندهای انتقال فرهنگی، تنوع منطقه‌ای و شکل‌گیری شبکه‌های بین‌فرهنگی عصرمفرغ جنوب‌غرب آسیا نقشی کلیدی داشته است.
