The centuries 10th and 11th AH in Safavid dynasty is very prominent from a political, historical, and artistic point of view, as Iranian artists mastered many artistic skills during this period of time. The decorative inscriptions in the historical buildings are used so skillfully that no one could find such elegant artistic works before. In addition to building skills, the art of calligraphy on objects also made great progress in this era. One can observe the elements of Shia art and various Islamic prayers and praise of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Hazrat Ali (PBUH) which have been used on the metalwork in an artistic manner.
This article aims at introducing the bowl with an inscription on it, known as the "prayer bowl" which is dedicated to the Zanjan Archaeological Museum for more protection by one of the Zanjan coppersmith masters. The said bowl was inherited by his predecessors. The bowl was widely used and respected due to the people’s beliefs. It has inscriptions with Quranic chapters, various Islamic and Shiite prayers such as Nadali, Akashe, and Maknun, pictures of twelve constellations of the Zodiac, numbers, and magical letters. The prayers have been used in mosques and religious gatherings for granting one’s needs, protecting from evil and jinn, curing illness, bringing luck into one’s life, etc. In the present article, the inscriptions and motifs of the mentioned prayer bowl have been reread and analyzed. Also, the reason why the bowl was used by people is discussed here.
