Abstract: (662 Views)
Coins and rock reliefs are the most important elements of a nation's culture and beliefs. For propaganda and celebration of his victory over the Romans, Shāpur I ordered five-rock reliefs to be carved in Fars and described the event in the inscription of the Ka'ba of Zoraster. From the text of the inscriptions, one can guess the name of people mentioned in the rock reliefs. By finding a gold coin of Shāpur I, with a motif different from his usual coins and considering the inscription on it, we can conclude that in addition to the inscription, he ordered the minting of the gold coin on the occasion of defeating the Roman Valerian.
This study aims at comparing the motifs in the reliefs and coins of the Shāpur I, to show the differences or similarities of the image of Shāpur on them. The results will also answer the question of why the phrase "king of Iran and non-Iran" which is mentioned in the inscriptions of Shāpur, is not seen on his coins. The research is conducted in a historical-analytical method and the collection of materials is done based on library resources.
