عصر سلجوقیان، یکی از ادوار خلاقانه جهان اسلام و هنرهای ایرانی است. از میان هنرهایی که توانست شکوفایی‌اش را در این عصر رقم بزند، فلزکاری است که به روش سلجوقی منسوب است. در فلزکاری این دوره سبک و روش خاص و مستقلی به وجود آمد که در سایه تشویق و حمایت امراء و سلاطین سلجوقی ایجاد شد و هنرمندان و صنعتگران به‌ویژه در نواحی شمال‌شرق ایران یعنی خراسان و ماوراءالنهر، روش‌ها، فنون و سبک‌های جدیدی آفریدند. بارزترین وجه تزیینی این آثار، کتیبه‌هایی هستند که برگرداگرد یا بخشی از بدنه فلزی اثر خودنمایی می‌کنند و حاوی اطلاعات ارزنده‌ای هستند. تنوع نگاره‌ها و خط‌نگاره های زیبایی که بر بستر این کتیبه‌ها نقش بسته است، نه تنها اطلاعات محتوایی از فرهنگ و اعتقادات آن روزگار در اختیار می گذارند، بلکه منبع تصویری و نوشتاری غنی را ارائه می‌دهند که بر کیفیت ممتاز آرایه‌های ظروف فلزی مکتب هرات تاکید می‌کنند. در این پژوهش، شناخت کیفیت کتیبه‌های این ظروف در دو حوزه نگاره و خط‌نگاره مدنظر است. نتایج کلی تحقیق، انعکاس‌دهنده‌ی دیدگاه‌های فرهنگی و اعتقادی سازندگان ظروف و بازتاب وضعیت هنرهای نوشتاری و تصویری جامعه آن روزگار هستند. شاخصه‌های زیباشناختی کتیبه‌های ظروف فلزی مکتب هرات در عصر سلجوقی در بکارگیری تزئینات هندسی، گیاهی، جانوری و انسانیِ متنوع و استفاده از خط تصویری (نوع دیگری از نقوش مرکب که از ترکیب خط با صور جانوری یا انسانی ایجاد می‌شود) به زبان عربی و خطوط کوفی و نسخ مشهود است که با مضامینی چون عبارات دعایی، تمجید و بیان قدرتِ دارنده‌ی ظرف و ثبت اسامی هنرمندان، صنعتگران و سفارش‌دهندگان همراه شده است. این مقاله به روش تحلیلی-تطبیقی و جمع‌آوری منابع به طریق کتابخانه‌ای-اسنادی انجام شده است.
