Sogdian Christian manuscripts known as the E5 Collection were found in the Turfan oasis in the early twentieth century. These manuscripts are one of the most important bilingual texts dating back to the ninth and tenth centuries AD and have been translated from Syriac origin into Christian Sogdian. Their content includes selected verses from the Gospels of Matthew, Luke, and John. Since the translator of these texts dealt with a religious and sacred text, he was, as far as possible, very faithful to the original text (=Syriac) and provided word-for-word translations of it. The result is a Sogdian text with an accurate translation of the Syriac original. However, it also shows the special features of the Sogdian language as one of the Middle Eastern Iranian languages. By analyzing these Sogdian texts and comparing them with the Syriac origin, the reader is confronted with a kind of translated literature with outstanding features.
