Vernacular architecture is a type that is derived from cultural patterns and indicates the customs, spirit, emotions, thoughts, beliefs, tastes, and art of the society. This type of architecture grows within societies and adapts to the social and ecological conditions of that community. The main characteristics of vernacular architecture are the participation of people in its construction, using natural materials, harmony with nature, and utilizing local techniques. "Pigeon tower" or "pigeon house" is one of the less known and introduced local buildings which is to be studied in the present article in order to achieve an analytical knowledge of it, through historical texts and travelogues. Therefore, it is very important to review the texts of the aforementioned documents and extract the materials related to pigeon houses for preparing the database. For this purpose, special attention has been paid to the review and classification of the materials, in terms of transposition as well as subject diversity. After the classification of research materials, the position and features of pigeon houses have been investigated in the context of their formation during different Islamic periods, in the first step. Then, the history and the legal system of them have been studied. Also, the geographical distribution of pigeon houses has been studied.
